1 Corinthians 12 talks about the different members of the body of Christ.
And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. – 1 Corinthians 12:16
What this whole passage is talking about is that every Christian has his place in the body of Christ, and we shouldn’t wish to be a part that we are not. But what if you are an eye, but no one is treating you like an eye?
Here’s an example; you feel like God is calling you to be a worship leader, but no matter how hard you try, you can’t get onto the worship team. Maybe you want to be a pastor or a cell leader or the official lawn mower, but no matter how hard you work for it and want to do it, no one let’s you do it. God could very well be calling you to be an eye, but it sure does seem like you are the toenail.
First of all, definitely make sure that God actually wants you to be an eye. 1 Corinthians 12 is all about not despising that you are a hand instead of an eye. It’s really important that there are people in the church that aren’t seen and are doing all of the other jobs besides being an eye.
Maybe God is calling you to be an eye, here’s how to become one. Stop trying.
I hear conversions a lot about how someone is trying and trying to be on the worship team or be a missionary or be a church planter, but no one seems to recognize them or their ability. What always seems to float to the top in these conversations is that they are trying really really hard to get there. That might actually be the problem. When we try to do things ourselves, they tend not to work.
Another thing you should do to become an eye is to stop thinking about it. When you are constantly thinking about becoming the worship pastor or being sent out as a missionary, you start to become obsessed. When you become obsessed you start to get bitter. When you’re bitter, God can’t use you. (That’s good. I should tweet that!)
The best way to become what you think God is calling you to be is to just wait and let God do it for you. God really likes to use people who are humble and willing to just work for His kingdom and never being seen. Those are the kind of people that end up being eyes, even though they seem to start our as toenails.
So here it is,
The Checklist To Becoming An Eye!
- Make sure God is actually calling you to be an eye
- Stop trying to be an eye
- Stop thinking about being an eye
- Let God make you an eye in His own timing
That’s it! If you want to be an eye, follow these steps and let God make you an eye when He says you’re ready! Besides, if you try to become an eye all by yourself, you’ll probably just just end up being a hand with an eye drawn on it.
