Some time ago I had a friend that I only really ever saw or talked to about once a week. He was pretty cool. A nice guy who had cool stuff to talk about.

One day someone said to me, “Why do you like him? He’s a jerk to everyone but you.” To this I replied, “Well, he’s nice to me. I have no reason to not like him.”

It’s good to have friends who you are close to. People who speak into your life and you speak into theirs. Friends who lift you up when you’re down and who lend a hand when you need one. But it’s totally cool to have friends that are totally surfacey.

It’s definitely not good to only have surfacey friends, but a few great friends and several surfacey ones is totally fine. And it’s nice to stay out of the drama and just say, “They’re nice to me.”
