Let me start out by saying, this post isn’t about you. I’m not writing this about anyone I know. If you get the feeling that this post is about you, then you should probably read the whole thing and reevaluate your life.
“Don’t look at me! I have a zit!” “I don’t want to be in any pictures!” “Everyone is staring at me!” “The pastor only said that because he knows I’m struggling with it!” “I didn’t have time to finish my makeup this morning!” “Everyone knows that I didn’t put on deodorant today!” “I hate going to Starbucks because I don’t fit in there!” “These pants are horrible and everyone thinks so!” “If I can’t get that shirt then I might as well not even show my face in public again!”
When I hear people saying stuff like this, it makes me crazy for two reasons,
- Nobody even noticed your zit (or pants, shirt, haircut, social disorder, lack of makeup, lack of deodorant, what have you.)
- You think about yourself more than anything else, and it shows.
Vanity is weird. It’s one of those things that seems to be one thing, but is actually something different. It seems like you have a low opinion of yourself, but it’s actually that you are overly proud of yourself.
When I walk into a room, you know what I think of all of the people in that room? Nothing. You know what all those people think about me? Nothing. You know what me and all of those people think about you when you walk into a room? Nothing.
If you walk into a room and immediately think that everyone is staring at you and thinking about you or talking about you, you’re probably wrong. If the pastor is talking about something that you’re dealing with and you think he’s only saying it because you mentioned it to him or somehow he found out, you’re probably wrong. If someone you know writes something on Facebook or on their blog and it’s totally about you but they didn’t write your name, you’re probably wrong.
If you are so concerned about what everyone thinks of you, you’re never going to be happy. The likelihood is that they’re not thinking about you, but even if they are what they think shouldn’t have any bering on your life anyway.
God loves you. He cares for you more than anyone else ever could. Not only does He care for you, He’s the most powerful dude in the universe. His opinion matters a lot more than that cute guy at Starbucks who spends his day writing his screenplay on his MacBook Air.
God doesn’t care what you look like or smell like. He doesn’t care about your pimples or your hair. So why worry so much able it?
If you tend to think that everyone is talking about you or staring at you, then you really need to take a look at your life and your thoughts. You need to pray that God will help you to be less vein. Because let me tell you, it’s not cute.
