For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.
1 Corinthians 12:8-11
I talk to people and hear people saying things like, “Why don’t we hear God’s voice like they did in the Bible?” and, “Why aren’t churches using the gift of discernment anymore?” and, “Where are the healings like in Jesus’ days?”
The first thing I think when I hear these things is, they must not go to my church. But after that, I wonder why I’ve experienced all these things but these other Christians haven’t. After a few times hearing stuff like this, I had a revelation. All of the people saying stuff like this have something in common.
Reading the verses above, you’ll find what are known as the Gifts of the Spirit. These are gifts given to all Christians by God through the Holy Spirit so that we are able to function and grow until Christ’s return.
They are Wisdom, Knowledge, Faith, Healings, Miracles, Prophecy, Discernment, Tongues and Interpretation of Tongues. Many scholars and teachers will break these gifts down into groups based on the category, but I have a different way of breaking them down.
- Interpretation of Tongues
The one thing I’ve noticed that all of the Christians who haven’t experienced the gifts in the first group have in common, is that they deny the gifts in the second group.
When you deny some of the gifts given by the Holy Spirit, you probably won’t receive any of them.
In my life, I’ve experienced every one of these gifts. I’ve either had them work through someone to me, though me for someone else or I’ve seen them work in the church. Have you experienced all of the Gifts of the Spirit? Have you experienced any of them?
I have a couple verses that are really good to put into practice if you haven’t experienced these gifts.
“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!”
Well, what does that have to do with the Gifts of the Spirit? I’m glad you asked!
When you deny some of the gifts given by the Holy Spirit, you probably won’t receive any of them. BUT if you are open to all of the gifts (even the ones in the second list) and you ask for God to give them to you, He will! “How much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!”
The number one place to start is to ask to speak in tongues. Ask God and He will give it to you. If you don’t start speaking in tongues right away, ask again. Keep asking until God baptizes you in the Holy Spirit and you speak words that you don’t understand. Once you start speaking in tongues (often), all these other gifts start to open up to you. And when you hang out with other people who speak in tongues (often), you will soon see every one of the Gifts of the Spirit working.
That’s how it happened to me.
