You Don't Have To Be Creative (When You Worship)

Have you ever been in a worship service and the worship leader says, “Praise God in your own words”? I don’t know about you, but this seems to happen a lot at my church.

It used to be that I didn’t know what to say. I’d just sort of mumble one or two things over and over again. I wasn’t very creative when it came to praising God. But one day, I figured it out.

You don’t have to be creative when you worship.

I’m a very creative person. Being creative is great! I make lots of graphics in Photoshop and Illustrator for this website. I create videos and direct TV at theDove. I even sell some of the stuff I make on Etsy! But I’m not very creative when it comes to worshiping God. Turns out, you don’t have too.

God is so much greater and more wonderful than anything else that there’s no way we can complement Him more than by just listing facts about Him.

When people say facts about me, some of the stuff sounds good, but mostly, I sound pretty bad. But God is perfect. When you say facts about Him, it’s literally the best things you can say about anyone. Instead of trying to make something up about how great God is (like you would if you were complementing me), just stick to the facts.

Here’s a list of great facts you can speak about God when you worship;

  1. God is greater than all others
  2. God reigns over all the universe
  3. Every good and perfect gift comes from Him
  4. God is perfect
  5. God is love
  6. God cannot do wrong
  7. God is mighty
  8. God has no beginning
  9. God has no end
  10. God saved you from sin and darkness
  11. Without God there is no life

And there’s a bunch more! But if you are ever lost for words when it comes to worshiping God, start with these. Don’t think you have to make something new up. Because you can’t.

Josiah Douglas isn't a super smart guy (even though he has a bachelor's degree), and he doesn't know a lot about God (his degree is in theology), but he does think a lot and sometimes he writes those things down so that you can read them too!
