God is Love

God is Love

God is Love

Four times in the Bible there are “God is” statements. Each of these gives us a glimpse at God’s character. Let’s take a look at one of those statements. God is love.

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.
1 John 4:7-8

Who is God? God is love.

God doesn’t just have love, He is love. His substance is love.

God doesn’t just have love, He is love. His substance is love. God is made of love. 1 John 4:7-8 says that we must love each other, because love is from God. The evidence that we know God is that we have and show love. The proof that someone doesn’t know God is that he doesn’t love. The reason that love is so important for Christians is that our God is love.

How do we describe love? Well, the Bible does that for us as well.

Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends.
1 Corinthians 13:4-8a

You’ve probably heard this one before. This is the Bible’s description of love. If this is the description of love, and God is love, then this is also a description of God.

You could read it this way,

God is patient and kind; God does not envy or boast; God is not arrogant or rude. God does not insist on His own way; God is not irritable or resentful; God does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. God bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. God never ends.

That sure sounds like a God I’d like to serve. In fact, that sounds like how God has revealed Himself throughout the rest of the Bible. That is the God we serve.

Through this one little statement found in 1 John 4:8, God is love, we just learned a lot about who God is, how God acts, and what God does.

Who God is

  • Patient
  • Kind
  • Not Envious

How God acts

  • Not Rude
  • Doesn’t Insist on His Own Way
  • Not Irritable
  • Not Resentful
  • Doesn’t Rejoice in Wrongdoing
  • Rejoices in Truth

What God does

  • Bears all Things
  • Believes all Things
  • Hopes all Things
  • Endures all Things
  • Never Ends

I want to leave you with one last thought. If this is how God describes Himself, and we are to strive to be like God, then these words should describe each one of us as well.

Josiah is patient and kind; Josiah does not envy or boast; Josiah is not arrogant or rude. Josiah does not insist on his own way; Josiah is not irritable or resentful; Josiah does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Josiah bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

It stings a little because I know that I don’t measure up. Can you put your name in there? Do you measure up? Through Christ, one day we will, but for now we can only do our best day by day. That being said, it is comforting to know that God does measure up, and God doesn’t change.

This is a four part series examining the “God is” statements in the Bible. You can find and read all four parts here.

Josiah

Josiah Douglas isn't a super smart guy (even though he has a bachelor's degree), and he doesn't know a lot about God (his degree is in theology), but he does think a lot and sometimes he writes those things down so that you can read them too!
