God is Light

Four times in the Bible there are “God is” statements. Each of these gives us a glimpse of God’s character. Let’s take a look at one of those statements. God is light.

This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
1 John 1:5

God is light. What does that mean?

Light, though it can’t be felt or held onto, is physical and can be measured. Light is not the absence of darkness; darkness is the absence of light. When there is light, it fills up all the space around it and sheds itself onto everything it can touch. The light from our sun and the stars shine even though they are amazing distances away.

God, just like light, can’t be felt or held onto, but He is real. He is not God because He has no sin; He has no sin because He is God. No matter where He is, He fills the space and effects everything around Him. Even from what must be amazing distances, God’s presence is felt as if He were with us in the same room.

When we talk about God as light, you are probably imagining the light from a light bulb or a candle. You might even think, no He is brighter than that, He’s like those huge lights in stadiums that light up the entire field as if it were the middle of the day. I don’t think that accurately demonstrates the light of God. The light of God is like the sun.

The sun is bright. It is so bright that on a sunny day, you can’t hardly get away from it. The light of the sun is such a wide and broad beam that it covers all we can see. There is nothing the light of the sun doesn’t touch. The shade of trees doesn’t stop the light of the sun. It might darken it a little, but the light is so penetrating you can still see everything. Even on dark, overcast days, you can still see everything around you because the light of the sun penetrates the clouds. No matter where you look during the day, the light of the sun is there brightening the world, allowing us to see.

God allows us to see. No matter where we go, He is there. Even if we try and find a place in the shade to get away from Him, He is still there. People who are in the world think that they live Godless lives, but I think if we were to ever really experience true Godlessness, we would know. Just like how our entire world would change the moment the sun disappears, every aspect of our lives would change if God were to ever not be there. We don’t realize how God completely holds the universe together. Even just the hope that things might one day be better would probably disappear from within us if God were to suddenly not exist.

In God there is no darkness, that is, there is no sin, no evil, no malice. You won’t find it. It doesn’t exist. When we let Him in, His light will reveal sin and darkness within us. Light and darkness don’t exist together. When there is light, it expels darkness. If you put a light bulb in a box, the darkness inside that box disappears. The same thing happens when we allow God into our life. As we let Him into deeper and darker places in our heart, He expels all the darkness in those areas.

God is light. His substance is light. Where there is light, there is no darkness. Just like the light of the sun holds our world together, God holds our lives together. Without light, we would be blind. Without God, we would be nothing. When we abide in God, we live in the light.

This is a four part series examining the “God is” statements in the Bible. You can find and read all four parts here.

Josiah Douglas isn't a super smart guy (even though he has a bachelor's degree), and he doesn't know a lot about God (his degree is in theology), but he does think a lot and sometimes he writes those things down so that you can read them too!
