Four times in the Bible there are “God is” statements. Each of these gives us a glimpse of God’s character. Let’s take a look at one of those statements. God is spirit.
God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.
God is Spirit. But what is spirit? What does that mean?
What we see takes up space and volume. It has color and shape. There is a substance that can be perceived. Spirit cannot be perceived. It has no shape; no volume; no color; no substance. It is ethereal and eternal in nature. You cannot catch spirit.
If God is spirit, then this means God has no substance. He is invisible. He is both ethereal and eternal. The same way you can’t point at a part of your body and say, “this is my spirit,” you can’t point at anything on earth and say, “this is God.” This is why God specifically told the Israelites not to make any images of Him.
Therefore watch yourselves very carefully. Since you saw no form on the day that the Lord spoke to you at Horeb out of the midst of the fire, beware lest you act corruptly by making a carved image for yourselves, in the form of any figure, the likeness of male or female
This passage goes on to say not to make an image of any animal, fish, bird, or bugs. It also says not to worship the sun, moon or stars. The earth and nothing on it is to be worshiped because it isn’t God. And nothing can be pointed at and said, this is what God looks like, because God is spirit. It’s easy for new Christians who aren’t strong in the faith to fall into mysticism
It’s easy for new Christians who aren’t strong in the faith to fall into new age mysticism. The reason is because this mysticism offers a spiritual experience that can be seen, felt and perceived. Burning sage to ward off spirits and placing special stones is easier to accept from a human standpoint than praying in Jesus name. You can see the sage; you can feel the stone; you can see and smell the smoke. People are born with a sense for the spiritual, but when we aren’t solid in the Word of God, it’s easy to try and bring what we sense in the spiritual into the physical realm. This is what new age offers. You may think that you are inviting God’s Spirit by doing these physical actions, but you aren’t. The Spirit of God is moved through the faith of man, not though mystic actions.
Since God is spirit, He wants us to worship Him in spirit and in truth. To worship in truth means to worship rightly. God wants us to worship Him the way He wants to be worshiped, the ways spelled out in the Bible. To worship Him in spirit means we must truly and genuinely worship God from our spirit. When you mean the worship you are giving God, you can feel it inside you. That’s what it means to worship Him in spirit.
